Nail Fungus MedicineNail Fungus

Nail Fungus (also called onychomycosis) is a fungal infection that causes the nails to become discolored, brittle and thickened. Sometimes there are other reasons that your nails can become unsightly so if you are considering oral medication as a treatment a biopsy of the nail will be obtained prior to starting oral medication. This is to ensure that fungal organisms are present because if your nails do not contain fungal organisms the medication will not change their appearance. Oral medication requires blood test monitoring prior to and during treatment. There are both topical and oral antifungals available by prescription. Occasionally a nail will be so deformed that the best option for treatment will be permanent removal of the nail. You will have a careful discussion about all of your options with the doctor prior to making any decisions.
